The first FO of the year is done!
Pattern: We Call Them Pirates, courtesy of Hello Yarn
Yarn: Dale Heilo, 1 skein each of black and natural for the hat; 1 skein of Baby Cashmerino in black for the lining
Needles: Size 3 Addi Turbos for the hat, Size 1 Addis for the lining
Fun project! I was able to practice my very rusty, two-handed fair isle technique, as well as improve my ability to follow charted instructions. Following the chart really threw me at the onset, as the main color is charted in white (where I was using black yarn), and the contrasting color charted in black (where I was using white yarn!). Can you see how a girl could get a little confused? It's amazing how your brain adapts, however, and by the second set of skull repeats, the whole white box = black yarn, black box = white yarn discrepancy wasn't even an issue.
I also didn't have any experience using live stitches, rather than a cast off/on edge, when finishing a hem -- in this case, the soft, inner lining of the hat. I was a bit confused on how to make it work, but think I came up with a good approach.
I split the live stitches between two circular needles, then steamed the hem flat. I then pinned the hem into place, and commenced the sewing up!
Sweet! It was difficult to keep a perfectly straight hem edge due to how the second strand of yarn is weaved on the wrong side (yep, I'm a weaver, not a floater!) but overall, it worked like a charm.
Yay!! The Husband loves it, and I may have to modify the pattern a bit to make a Bean-sized one, just as Amy predicted.
Happy Friday! Hope everyone has a great weekend!
Nice job!

Ahah! I suspected a bean sized one would be hard to resist ;) Turned out great - and will be adorable on the little one later this year.
