So I'm taking a mini-break from the 800+ stitches per round shawl (only about 10 more rows to go before working the knitted edge on!) and resurrected an old Man Sock project from eons ago.
Pretty shortie. Except it DOESN'T FIT. Which is probably why I abandoned it originally, but seriously, it's been so long that I don't really remember for sure. But I'm absolutely certain now, that it DOESN'T FIT. The ribbed cuff is too small, and my guy can hardly get it over his heel! It seems as though I got a little tense and overzealous with the must-make-the-ribbing-snug-enough mentality, because my gauge in the ankle is like 8 stitches per inch, and the foot is 6 stitches per inch.
Gah.
I didn't have the heart to frog the sock just yet (poor sock), so I cast on anew with the second skein.
Better. I used the twisted German cast-on holding two needles together so the edge is nice and sproingy, and am trying out the garter stitch edge heel flap from Sensational Knitted Socks. Which is a pretty rocking cool sock reference book! Like I mentioned before, the layout isn't the most attractive, but the content is presented in a super organized fashion, and I love how the directions accomodate knitters working on either four, three, or two needles. My favorite chart, though, is the one that gives the basic foot measurements for men, women and children based on shoe size. Extremely useful for when the intended foot isn't readily available for fittings, if you know what I mean. You'd think a similar chart would be in all sock books, but this is the first one I've seen.
And as a funny aside, I just need to share that I'm wearing a maternity-type skirt (denim, from the Gap) for the first time today! I'm not really showing yet, but this move was purely out of oh-my-god-I-have-no-clean-clothes desperation. But now I'm getting why women transition into preggo clothes early -- SO COMFORTABLE!! No binding in the belly area, no sucking it in,... pretty cool. And actually not too unfortunate looking! But I'll do laundry tonight -- really!!
